Web Design Principles

What I like about this dribble.com design is the easy to read layout. The header and navigation is easy to find at the top of the page, with clear font and the background colour is a nice neutral colour. I see all 3 design principles used in this layout. All the criteria like; graphic design principles related to colour, layout, and graphics. Interface design like how the user interacts with the site, primarily related to the navigation menu and information design content can be organized logically throughout the site and on each page. Over all this webpage design is a great example of web design principles.

This Dribble.com design has a clear side bar showing all the different categories of clothing designs, colors, and sizes for a easy assessable way of shopping for certain items. Also this Design has a header and navigation bar on the top left side of the page. All these designs are clear to find and are very clear to use. This website layout also uses a lot of graphic design principles, and interface design.

My Magazine Cover

Balance/Contrast
  • Neutral White background
  • Large main focus photo placed in center
  • Easy to read bright text
  • Header bolded to stand out from the other colorful text
  • Pink bunny ears on pugs, matches text color yet makes sure it stands out
Rhythm/Repetition (Movement/Pattern)
  • Used same font for subheadings
  • Kept using same color pattern and colors for text
Emphasis/Alignment
  • Large photo of the 2 pugs in center, while smaller text surrounds it
  • Subtitles are in all different sizes and colors

Unity/Proximity (Proportion)

  • I used similar fonts and sizes on the subtitles
  • I kept the color scheme similar

Sexual Images in Media

This photo shows a Victoria Secret model posing for a VS photoshoot, to some people they see her as being vulnerable, and having childlike silliness by having her head tilted and hand on the side of her face. She has that "sexy innocence" look on her face too making her stand out to men in a pornographic way.

In this photo it shows Kylie Jenner modelling for a puma. This picture shows her leaning in a way that looks like she's with-drawled from the things around her, she got a sexual desire look in her expression, that could have pornographic relation.

This picture of Gigi Hadid posing for GUESS makes her look very submissiveness and childlike, the way she is sitting and holding her hands, while her hair is covering most of her face and her expression is scared and needy looking. You could say this picture could relate to something from pornography. The needy look in her expression also makes her look like she's wanting protection.

I think these views on pictures like the ones above are thought into way to much, and that most of the women's poses or expressions isn't for mens desires or to make them look like they need sex or is trying to promote things in relation to sexual desires.

I think depending on how much you advertise things that have elements similar to pornography, you could take it to your advantage. I get that sex sells but I don't believe that it should be the only easy way for products and companies to promote themselves. I don't think its inappropriate or appropriate, it all depends on what elements are used and how many.

Understanding Design Principles

Balance/Contrast
  • Neutral white background with bright pink text helps to catch your eye.
  • Easy to read text, with big bolded letters to highlight the important or interesting detail featured in the article.
  • Model is placed right centered to grab your attention, she's dressed in white to blend into the background but her dark brown hair and complexion helps her stand out. Being accessorized with the yellow camera makes a cute statement with an addition of minimal color, along with the splash of floral on her shirt.
  • Models photo is over magazine title to make her more noticeable as well, as she is the main focus.
Rhythm/Repetition (Movement/Pattern)
  • All of the headlines and text use the same font.
  • Using only pink text for words/phrases being meant to stand out, and black for the other context.
  • Same amount of spacing between each little paragraph.
Emphasis/Alignment
  • Large image of model placed in the center, having the text surrounding her.
  • Subtitles are enlarged and bolded.
  • Her dark brown hair contrasts with the white background and over the pink text, gaining your attention.
Unity/Proximity (Proportion)

  • The cover was consistent with using minimal color but just enough to make headlines and the leading image stand out.
  • Fonts and sizes relatively stayed similar throughout the entire page.
  • Having brief quotes and explanations for the subtitles without diverting the headings.
